Serif quote tattoo on the forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a line-by-line text tattoo in a classic serif typeface, reading "We are a part of you, invisible to anyone else" across three lines. The letters are solid black with smooth, even edges and a clean, consistent weight. The text fills most of the frame against pale skin, with a dotted mat visible at the lower right.

In the bottom one, under a box of wool shears with the blades oiled and wrapped in newspaper, I found a pocket diary from the year I left home. Most pages were weather. Rain on the Tuesday, hard frost, the beck over the ford running brown. Then, on a page in late January, one line in pencil pressed so hard it dented the paper: we are a part of you, invisible to anyone else. No name, no reason, just the month.
I sat on an upturned crate and read it three times. It was not about me, I decided, because he was never a man for sentiment, and I had spent eleven years believing he had no words for anything but the price of hay. Then I remembered the night the ewes lambed early and I stayed up with him under the lamp, and he said nothing at all. He just passed me the warm bottle and let me hold the lamb's head against my coat until it breathed.
I put the diary in my inside pocket and left the shears on the bench. The tractor could wait for spring. The top gate needed locking, and I finally understood that the one who had been keeping watch over the farm all those years had been Dad, quietly, where nobody thought to look.
