Small cartoon character tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon character wearing a red and white striped bobble hat and round glasses is tattooed on the side of a finger. The design uses thin black outlines with a red accent on the hat, and the character is shown against a plain skin background with a tiled floor and white cloth behind the hand.

By eleven the square at Market Harrowgate had swallowed every striped scarf in the county, and Ruth still had not found the one she was paid to find. Her brief was simple enough: a children's illustrator's sketchbook, last seen in a crowd of two thousand people who all looked, she was fairly sure, exactly alike. Everyone wore wool. Everyone had a bobble hat. Half of them had spectacles that had slid down their noses while they ate pies.

She tried the obvious places. The pie stall, the bell tower steps, the queue for the duck race, where a man in a red and white hat turned out to be a retired vicar with strong views about cartoons. Her phone buzzed with a message from the agent, who wanted to know whether the book had turned up, in the tone of someone asking if the rain had stopped without going near a window.
Then she stopped looking for faces and started looking for gaps. Whoever had taken the sketchbook would not have carried it through the crowd. They would have left it somewhere a tidy person might sit down. She followed the bunting along the churchyard wall to a bench with a sign warning against climbing on it, and found the book wedged under the seat, a sandwich wrapper stuck to its cover like a bookmark.
She opened it on her knee. Page after page of the same figure lost in the crowd: striped hat, round glasses, always turned away, always just out of frame. On the final page the illustrator had drawn a woman squinting at a bench, surrounded by tiny identical people, and had pencilled a bobble hat onto her head too.
