Small fish outline on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black outline of a fish, shaped like the ichthys symbol, sits on the side of the ankle near the heel. A US quarter placed beside it shows the tattoo is only a few centimetres long. The image is a close, evenly lit photograph on a plain pinkish background, with the tattoo placed off-centre to the left.

The snow had sealed the Ferrier Road for three days when the last carter gave up and came limping across the yard of the Drowned Hart. I was behind the bar counting out candles. He set a quarter on the wood between us, American, worn smooth at the edge, and said it was all he had left that was worth anything. He wanted a bed, a bowl of something hot, and a promise the fire would last till morning.

The fish over the door was my grandfather's work. He was a wheelwright who painted signs on the side, and when the inn changed hands he cut a single curl above the lintel, one line with no fins to speak of, because he said a sign ought to be readable from a cart in the rain. Folk round here took it for a hart's tail until they got close. The carter said he had seen the same mark cut into a headstone in Lisbon, and that he did not believe in much, but he believed in a thing that hangs where you can see it.
We ate boiled eggs and the last of the smoked trout from the brook. He told me about a card game in Ohio where a man lost his boots on a single flip of a coin, and how the coin landed heads and the man refused to look at it, and so never learned the truth. I asked what he thought the coin had been. He turned the quarter over with one finger and said the woman on it had her back to him for a reason.
In the morning the sky was blue and the road a white line running off towards the hills. The carter left the quarter on the bar. I put it in the jar with the others, then took it out again and pressed it into the wet plaster under the sign, beside the fish, where anyone coming in out of the cold would have to look up to find it.
