Small fish outline on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline of a fish, facing left, sits on the inner wrist of a hand held in a loose fist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the fish has a single eye and a forked tail. The plain pale background keeps the tattoo as the clear focus, and the red nail polish is the only other colour in the frame.

The mark was the only thing Ondine Parr trusted on the flooded stairs, a fish drawn in one unbroken line, nose to the left, forked tail trailing like a ribbon. Every doorway in Sallow Quay carried one, chalked or scratched by people who had never seen a real fish. Ondine had asked her grandmother what a fish was for and was told it was for swimming, which had not helped with the water rising.

She worked the lower market for the tide council, carrying a tin of white paste and a brush the width of a finger. Her job was to renew the marks each spring, so the children coming down from the hill would know which cellars still held sweet water and which had gone to brine. The fish was simple to draw. Anyone could manage a line that bent once at the head and once at the tail. Her teacher had said the trick was never to lift the brush until the end, because a fish drawn in two pieces always looks as if it is trying to leave.
On the last morning of her round she reached the old chandlery and found a mark already there, fresh and sharp, and beneath it a second fish, smaller, drawn by someone whose hand shook. Two fish facing the same way, toward the open channel where the boats had once gone out. Ondine stood on the step with the brush dripping and understood that the children were not only learning where the water was. They were learning where to go.
She left the cellar door unmarked, let the paste dry on the handle of the brush, and followed the second fish down the steps.
