Small green-dressed stick figure girl
Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo shows a simple stick-figure girl with a round smiling face, two dot eyes and a green bow on her head. She wears a green triangular dress, with black outlines for the head, arms, dress and legs. The image is a close, straight-on photograph against plain skin, with the design centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Marjorie had been drawn in a hurry, which is why her arms stuck out sideways like a ticket inspector's and her green dress was a triangle that never quite reached the floor. She knew this because Tomasz had told her so, several times, while he worked at the kitchen table with the tip of his tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth. He was seven, and he had decided that everyone living on the back of his school project needed a bow, so she got one, a green one, perched on her round head like a small landed bird.

Every night, once the grown-ups had gone to bed, the figures in the margins of the paper waved at each other. There was a three-legged dog, a house with no door, and a sun wearing sunglasses that had been drawn in biro and was starting to fade. Marjorie waved to all of them, though her arms could only go up one way, and the sun always waved back twice to make up for it.
Then came the cardboard box. Tomasz's mother wrapped the mugs in newspaper and stacked the drawings between two tea towels, and for three days Marjorie lay in the dark wondering whether she would be left behind in the old kitchen with the cracked tiles and the drawer that stuck. On the fourth morning the box was opened in a bright room that smelled of fresh paint. Tomasz held her up to the fridge, pressed a magnet shaped like a lemon over one corner, and smoothed her flat with his palm.
Marjorie looked out across the new kitchen at the kettle, the fruit bowl and the window full of sky. She waved at the kettle, which had never waved back, and for the first time she did not mind that her arms only went up one way.
