Your master keeps the reed pen in a cup of sour ink and will not let you touch the good papyrus until you can draw the letter rho without lifting the reed. You have spent three winters on it. Your hand shakes in the mornings, the way the old man's does when the fog comes off the harbour and the lamps along the Canopic Way go out one by one.

Today he sets a fresh sheet before you, the roll still smelling of the reed beds at Thebes, and tells you to write the word for shepherd. You make the bowl of the letter in one breath, a closed loop that does not wobble, then drag the stem down through it. He watches the stem and not the bowl. When you finish, he takes the pen from you, touches the wet tip to the sheet just beneath the loop, and leaves a single dot there, round and black as a fly.

"A letter is a sound," he says. "The dot is where the breath goes before the next one."

You ask him what happens if the dot is left out. He shrugs and begins rolling the sheet up. "Then the shepherd keeps walking, and nobody knows where he stopped."
