Small love, heart, star, cross and infinity on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a cluster of small tattoos on the inner forearm near the wrist: the word love in cursive script, an outline heart, a solid five-pointed star, an infinity symbol and a small cross. The linework is thin and even, and all elements are rendered in solid black ink with no shading. The subjects are spaced loosely in a diagonal arrangement across the skin, against a plain pale wall.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the sawdust, it gets in your teeth. No, there's no lion. There hasn't been a lion since the summer the council took the field, and Dessie sold the last one to a man in Wolverhampton who wanted it for his garden. Tonight you get Ada on the wire, and you get it for nothing, because the tent is down to its last guy rope and I'm not carrying tickets home.

Ada had walked the high wire for thirty-one years without a net. Her mother taught her that the rope never ends if you keep your eye on the far pole, and that was the whole of the training. Over the entrance hung the company's old banner: a gold star, a cross beneath it, a heart, a figure of eight lying on its side for forever, and the word love in faded cursive that Dessie had painted himself the year he proposed to his wife in the ring.

On the last night the wire was strung between two lorries because the poles had rusted through. The audience was one boy with a torch and his grandad's flat cap. Ada stepped out. Halfway across, the lorry engine coughed and the wire dipped, and she did what her mother said: she looked at the far pole and not at the drop. She walked it. When she came down, the boy was clapping with the torch held up over his head like a little star.

Dessie says that's the whole trick of it, the wire doesn't end, you just keep taking the next step. Now go home before the cold gets in, and tell your mother you saw Ada walk the dark.
