The ice had crept back across the cut overnight, and Mae was already on the gunwale with the windlass, rapping at it like a neighbour who had not been invited in. You took the other end of the pole. Between you the boat shifted a yard, then stopped, the bow nosing the grey sheet with a sound like a dropped tray of cutlery.

Her father had painted the name on the bow years before, and in the lower corner of the same board, so small you could miss it, he had drawn a heart and split it down the middle with one stroke of the brush. Mae said it was so the boat would always know which half of the canal belonged to her. You thought it was the sort of joke a man made when he wanted it to outlast him. She never said whether she had kept the other half of the joke, or what she had done with it.

By the time you reached the bottom lock the sun was low and the water had opened into a black line straight down the middle of the cut, as if someone had run a blade through the ice. The lock keeper leaned on his gate and watched you come through, then nodded at the bow without a word, as though he had been expecting that mark for years.

At the top of the flight Mae set the windlass down on the roof and laid her palm flat against the cold board, over the heart. You put your hand beside hers, and the two of you held there while the engine ticked and cooled, the seam running cleanly between your fingers.
