Small outline heart on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is tattooed on the palm, between the fingers of one hand, with the second hand resting against it. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, filled colour or background detail. The ink is a dark black and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with the surrounding hands softly out of focus.

At Skerrow the boats went out before the light, and the women who stayed behind kept the nets in order. Mairi Gunn had mended nets since she could hold a needle, and her knots were the tightest on the quay. The night the Brightwater failed to come past the bar, she sat on the harbour wall with a half-mended mesh across her knees and would not go in.

Before a man sailed, the old custom said, his wife drew a small heart in soot from the lamp, pressed it to her own palm, and he laid his hand over it so the two marks met. Mairi had done it for Tam that morning, her fingers cold, his palm warm and rough with tar. She had watched him row out with the heart still between them in her memory, and a fishwife's superstition seemed a poor thing to lean on once the tide turned.
Near midnight a knock came, and it was Ewan Reid, the mate, with his sleeve torn and salt in his beard. The Brightwater had struck the Ness rocks and broken her back, he said, but Tam was on the shingle below the Ness, cold and cursing and alive. He had clung to a cask until the lifeboat men found him. Mairi asked how a man keeps hold of a cask in that sea. Ewan only shook his head and said Tam had asked for her before he asked for water.
She went down the steps with a lantern, not running, because running would have meant she had doubted him. On the shingle Tam lifted his hand to her, and there, faint in the lamplight, was the small outline she had drawn, pressed clean onto his skin. The soot had washed from the lines, but the shape held. She took his hand, closed her fingers over it, and did not let go all the way home.
