Small outline heart on the shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is tattooed on the upper shoulder of a person wearing a loose grey marl top that sits off the shoulder. The heart is drawn in a thin, single black line with no shading, and it sits as a small focal point on otherwise bare skin. The soft, neutral background and cropped framing keep attention on the tattoo and the shoulder line.

Late August, and Ruth Pellow had been sent up the ladder in the Cold Harbour orchard because her brother's knees had given out in July. The Bramleys were coming down heavy this year, dull green and stubborn in the morning mist. She worked with a canvas bag at her hip and a stub of carpenter's pencil behind one ear, and she tried not to look at the crates stacked by the gate, where Mr Aske had chalked the weights.

The crates came from the Aske cider house, pine slats gone silver with years of rain. Mr Aske's daughter, Nell, had been drawing on them since she was small: tiny hearts, one line each, never lifting the pencil, the way her mother had taught her to draw a sum without crossing out. Nobody had ever asked what the hearts meant. Ruth had assumed they were for luck, the sort of thing you did to keep your hands busy while the kettle boiled.
On the last Saturday the lorry came for the apples early, and Nell wasn't at the gate. Ruth found her in the lower field under the walnut tree, sitting on an upturned bucket with the pencil clenched in her fist. "Can't finish it," Nell said, holding out a crate lid. The heart on it was unbroken except at one point, where the line had run out and started again half an inch off, like a stitch someone had been too tired to match.
Ruth took the pencil, sat on the grass beside her, and drew the rest of the curve to meet the first. It was not neat. When she handed the lid back, Nell tilted it towards the light and laughed, then loaded it onto the lorry with the others, and the heart rode off down the lane towards the market at Tenbury with its one wobbly join, the only part of it that was not perfect.
