Small star tattoos on wrists and hands
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Several pairs of hands meet over a pale marbled table, palms up and fingers overlapping in the centre of the frame. Each visible wrist or hand carries a tiny dark four-pointed star or cross-like mark, drawn in simple solid black lines with no shading. The ink is black and grey against natural skin tones, and the photograph is a close, slightly soft snapshot.

Four of them sat around the card table in Mrs Okafor's back room with the lamp turned low, and the rain drummed on the skylight like someone impatient to be let in. Nobody had said the word 'sell' since supper. Dell had the deed folded in an envelope under the sugar bowl, and every time the bowl shifted, one of them flinched.

The stars had been Dell's idea. The summer the bank took their mother's orchard, the four of them walked the rows at dusk, counting pears nobody would ever pick, and Dell said that if they couldn't keep the trees they could at least keep each other. Ray got the ink from a man above the chip shop who took payment in cigarettes. Four points each, no more, the way you'd mark a compass on a map you meant to follow home.
Now Ray slid his hand flat across the baize, palm up, and the others did the same, fingers reaching toward the middle like spokes. 'Say it,' Dell said. 'Say we don't sign.' Nobody did. The lamp hissed. Ray tapped the little star inside his wrist against the envelope, once, twice, then pushed the envelope across the table to the youngest, who had not looked up since the rain began.
Morning found the deed still under the sugar bowl, the lamp burnt dry, and four pairs of hands asleep on the table, all of them open.
