Small turtle tattoo on a wrist
Other · Colour · Photo
A small turtle is tattooed on the inside of a wrist, shown upside down with a pale blue shell and yellow-tan head and limbs. Thin dark outlines define the shapes, and soft shading gives the shell some depth. A few tiny dark marks sit above the turtle, and the hand with dark nail polish and a silver ring rests on a purple blanket in the background.

The last tent of Quennell's Travelling Show had lost its red stripe by the time the turtle learned to turn itself upside down. Nobody taught it. Old Harrow the strongman swore the animal had watched the trapeze girl fall one wet Tuesday and decided to do better. The turtle was called Pell. It lived in a tin bath under the ringmaster's wagon, and it was the only act left that still drew people in off the market road.

Each night, before the ringmaster rang his bell, Ada Quennell set a copper bowl of warm water in the sawdust. Pell climbed in, rolled onto its back, and waved its yellow feet at the crowd. Then it righted itself, rolled over again, and walked the rim of the bowl without spilling a drop. Children paid their pennies to watch. Farmers paid in eggs and bacon. Ada counted the eggs and the pennies and did not count the weeks, because she knew the numbers would be worse than the pennies.
In November the horses went to a farm near Stroud. In December the wagons went one by one to a man who wanted them for firewood. On the last night the tent was half open to the cold, with only a dozen people on the benches. Ada set the bowl down anyway. Pell climbed in, rolled over, and stayed there with its legs in the air.
The ringmaster said it was finished. Harrow said it was dead. Ada knelt in the wet sawdust and saw that the animal was not stuck. It was watching the gap in the canvas, where a single star showed. A small girl in a borrowed coat tipped a farthing onto the blue shell. Pell rolled back over, took the coin in its beak, and carried it to Ada like a ticket home.
