Old Mrs Pryce had complained about the Tuesday tractor for thirty years, so when her nephew Gethin bottled the first pressing from the south slope and printed a label reading w(h)ine, nobody in Llanbedr thought it was clever. They thought it was a dig. Her kitchen had heard every grievance since the Coronation: the rain, the price of diesel, the vicar's hymn choices, the pigeons that ate the peas before anyone else could.

Gethin hung the first case in the cellar under a bulb with a broken pull cord and told his aunt to stop. She didn't. She sat on an upturned crate every evening with a jam jar and declared the wine thin, sour and unfit for a christening. Then in April a frost came down hard on the lower rows and took two thirds of the buds, and the grumbling was what kept the men in the sheds instead of the bar, mending wire and pruning until their hands bled.

By September the bottles that survived had more body than anything else in the valley. Mrs Pryce opened the last one on the chapel step, poured a finger into the jar and held it up to the light. "Still sour," she said, and drank the lot.

The label had two brackets around the h. Before she went home, she took a pen from her apron and ruled a line between them, the way she ruled her accounts, so that the word read whine and wine at once.
