Stay Sick lettering on the upper thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the words STAY SICK in small, thin black capitals on bare skin, visible through a ripped section of pale blue jeans. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The composition is a tight crop of the back of the upper thigh, with the leather jacket hem and jean pocket framing the tattoo.

Nobody in the Leeds van had asked for the drummer's name, so by the time the last train pulled in at Sheffield the gig was just a smell of spilt cider and a sore shoulder. Dessie sat on the cold platform bench with a Biro in one hand and a torn ticket in the other, trying to write down the set list before the songs slipped off the back of his head like rain off a bin lid.

Across the bench a station cleaner in a hi-vis tabard was mopping round the ticket machine. He had watched the band load out and said nothing, which Dessie decided counted as approval. When the speakers cut out at midnight, the cleaner had actually cheered, one fist in the air, then gone back to his bucket.
Dessie gave up on the set list and wrote the only line that had stayed with him, the one the bassist shouted at the end of every number, in crooked capitals across the back of the ticket. When the 00:52 finally came in with its doors hissing, he held it up for the cleaner. The man read it twice and laughed properly, the way people laugh at things they recognise. "Sounds like a shift on nights," he said.
On the train Dessie pressed his forehead to the window and watched the black fields slide past. Somewhere beyond Chesterfield he copied the words onto the fogged glass with one finger, then watched them cloud over and clear and cloud over again. Stay sick. It sounded like a promise and a dare at once, and he was too tired to work out which.
