Stippled rose temporary tattoo design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A black and white rose with curling petals and leaves, drawn with stippled dots and fine lines to build shading. It appears on a light background with the words TEMPORARY TATTOO in bold black letters, alongside a mint crop top, denim shorts and a green sandal in a shopping-style collage.

Maggie Fennick had brought a biro to the reunion because nobody at the Crown Hotel ever thought to bring one. The function room smelled of warm sausage rolls and floor polish, and the name badges were stuck on crooked. Across the room, Dean Abbott was telling the story about the chemistry lab fire, which had happened twice, and nobody believed him either time.

She had kept the sketchbook from Year Eleven. Mrs Ormerod had made them stipple roses for a whole term, dot by dot, until their wrists ached and the petals came out grey as weather. Maggie had been the only one to finish hers. She opened the book on the tablecloth, found the rose she'd drawn at fifteen, its leaves curling as if someone had told them a secret, and began to fill in the shadow beneath a petal with tiny dots.
Dean wandered over and looked over her shoulder. "You still doing Ormerod's roses?" She said she wasn't, not really. He tapped a place where a dot had gone wrong, a little comma of ink, and said he'd always thought hers was the best thing anyone made in that room. Maggie laughed and said it was the only thing anyone made in that room that hadn't set off the smoke alarm.
When the speeches started, she tore the page out along the stitching, folded it once and slid it under his plate beside the last sausage roll. Dean didn't look down until the vicar finished the toast. Then he unfolded it, turned it the right way up, and stared at the rose for a long time, trying to work out which of them had got the dots so neat.
