A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody had remembered name badges, so I wrote mine on a beer mat in biro and stuck it to my cardigan. The function room at the Sea View Social Club smelled of vol-au-vents and floor polish, and the DJ kept playing the same Spice Girls song because nobody had told him the first one was a mistake. I was halfway through my second glass of white wine when I spotted Kieran Doyle by the hatch to the kitchen, grey at the temples and holding a paper plate as if someone might take it off him.

In Year Nine, Kieran had brought a blue plush creature to school in a Co-op bag and claimed his cousin had won it at a fair in Hawaii. It had one enormous black eye, a purple ear sewn back on with the wrong thread, and a luggage tag he had written himself: Stitch. Ohana means family. Mr Pryce confiscated it during registration and locked it in the lost property cupboard, and Kieran was moved to another school by Easter. Nobody ever asked for it back.

'You still owe me a toy,' I said. He looked at me as if I were a ghost, then as if I were the lost property cupboard itself. I had kept it. I had lifted it from the cupboard the week we left, because I couldn't bear the thought of it going in a skip, and it had lived in a shoebox under my bed through three house moves and a divorce.

He took it from the carrier bag, turned it over, and found the tag still stitched to its back. 'Ohana,' he read, and laughed until he had to put the plate down on the nearest table. Then he tucked the blue creature under his arm and said we should go and find the others, and so we did, one table at a time.
