Mrs Oddie came up the stairs this morning with a hatbox and a face like a wet Sunday, declaring that the Pemberton girl had run off with a clerk and taken the good ribbon. I pointed out, with a slow blink of considerable dignity, that I had not touched the ribbon. Lavender, she said. I said that lilac was a matter of taste and that I had a great deal of it. She laughed at me, which I have decided to forgive.

The real reason for this letter is the pantry. Last night a mouse, a vulgar creature with no sense of station, ran straight across the kitchen table while the household was at supper. Everyone shrieked. I did not shriek. I rose, arranged my tail, and waited for the mouse to notice me. It noticed. It left by the coal hole with its dignity in tatters. Mrs Oddie set the end of the kipper before me and said I was a credit to the house, and I accepted it, because I am, as I have always maintained, a lady.

Write back soon, and do try to keep your whiskers out of the coal scuttle. The Pemberton girl sends her regards, though I suspect she only wants her ribbon back. Yours, in a bow that cost more than your entire family, Marguerite.
