A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ice cream van had been parked outside the Sandgate bus shelter since eleven, and Nia Harcourt had spent her last pound on a card of freebies from the man who sold them. "Summer So Hard," he'd said, tapping the packet as if it owed him money. Nia peeled the sheets apart on the bench beside her cousin Owen, who was sulking because his mum had said no to the skateboard.

They swapped. Owen took the pennant that said HOORAY and stuck it on his shin, where it wrinkled over the knob of his knee. Nia took the cactus, dampened it with a flannel and pressed it to the back of her hand, counting to sixty the way the packet said. When she lifted the paper the cactus came away in a thin yellow ghost, leaving a green bruise of ink behind.

By the time the van's jingle reached the end of the road, Owen had decided the heart with the closed eyes was the only one worth having, and he wanted it on his wrist. Nia gave it to him for two Fruit Pastilles and a promise not to mention the second pennant to anyone. He moved to Carlisle that Monday. The heart stayed on his wrist for nine days, through two baths and a school trip, and then it faded to a blue smudge. Nia kept the popsicle sheet in her jewellery box, pink with BE SWEET and its little flecks of confetti. On the last night of August she licked her thumb, pressed the popsicle to the bedroom window, and watched it cling to the glass until the rain took it.
