Sunflower peace sign with Simplicity script

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A sunflower with orange and yellow petals surrounds a white-ringed peace sign whose sections are filled with a speckled dot pattern. A thin black script reading Simplicity trails from a curling stem with a small green leaf on the right. The bold colour and clean black outlines sit against smooth skin, with a pale background and a grey sleeve at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sunflowers along the lane had gone to seed by the second week of September, their heads bowed like men waiting for a bus that wasn't coming. Maeve Tallis walked past them with a paper bag of windfall pears and counted the stalks the way her grandmother had taught her, aloud, under her breath. Forty-one. There should have been forty-two. The one missing had stood by the gate of Hollins Farm for as long as anyone could remember, and the gate was swinging open now on its bad hinge.

Inside the orchard, old Dennis Pask was on his knees in the grass with a trowel, digging at a patch of earth that had been turned over already. He didn't look up. He said the peace sign had been painted on the barn door in 1971 by a girl from the commune in Ashworth, and that the paint had been his mother's idea of a joke, because she had never once been at peace with anybody. He said the sunflower had come after, when the girl needed a reason to keep the sign from fading, and that she had buried something under it, a tin of letters, or a ring, or both.

Maeve knelt beside him. The soil smelled of rain and rotting apples. Her trowel struck metal within a minute, and the tin came up with its lid rusted into a single lump. Inside, folded small, was a sheet of paper with one word written across it in looping ink: Simplicity. Beneath it, in a different hand, someone had drawn a single green leaf and underlined it twice.

Dennis took the paper, read it, and laughed until he coughed. Then he handed it back. "Put it where the sun gets it," he said. "That's all the instruction she ever gave anyone."
