Sunflower with Wonder script on a foot
Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A bare foot with toes painted pale coral shows a colour tattoo of a sunflower with yellow petals, an orange-brown centre and green leaves, with the word Wonder in black script beneath it. The bold black outlines and flat fills suggest a traditional approach, and the sunflower is shaded with darker yellow and brown tones. A close-up of the sunflower sits on the right of the frame, showing the stippled centre and petal detail.

The sunflowers along the Tarrant road were taller than the church roof that summer, and Mabel Quince said they had been sown by a man who could not stop counting. Nobody in Hollin Bottom believed her, but nobody argued either, because the seed had come from the travelling tinker Abel Crane, who paid for his supper with a single black pip and told the children to plant it facing the sun. They did. By August the heads had turned to follow the light so faithfully that the farmers said the whole valley was looking one way, like a congregation waiting for the bell.

The trouble came when the rain would not stop in September and the heads hung heavy and brown. Mabel's brother Tom climbed the nearest stalk to see why it had drooped, and found the centre crowded with seeds packed in a pattern like a spider's web, each one fat with a small wonder of its own. He picked one and it split in his palm, pale and sweet. He ate it sitting on the wall, and then he went home and told his mother the flowers were not dying at all. They were only waiting to be asked.
So they asked. The village gathered in the field with baskets and sang the old counting song backwards, and the seeds fell into the baskets like coins. Abel Crane came back in the spring to find the lane lined with gold, and he said nothing, only lifted his hat and walked on towards the coast. Mabel kept one seed in a tin, and every morning she held it up to the window so the light could pass through its striped shell, and she never once forgot to look.
