Taurus zodiac symbol on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple Taurus zodiac symbol, a circle with a crescent above it, is tattooed in black on the inner wrist of a hand raised to the chin. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the solid black ink stands out against the skin. Two braided bracelets sit above the tattoo, and a grey knitted jumper fills the lower right of the frame.

A circle with a crescent on top, he said, the sun's own sign for April, and every cadet who ever wanted to be trusted with a sextant learned to draw it without looking.

You drew it nine times on the spare sheet while the Bay rolled the tea cups across the mess. Each one came out a little lopsided, the horns too wide, the ring slipping to one side like a pulled tooth. Okafor held the last one up to the lamp and said the stars didn't care about neatness. Then he showed you how the Hyades sit inside the bull's face, a loose scatter of faint lights tilting toward Aldebaran, the red eye that never blinks.
Three nights later the cloud tore open over the port bow at four in the morning. You were on lookout with the wind down your collar, and there it was, low and exact, the horns lifting out of the dark precisely where the almanac had promised. You didn't call it out. You went to the wheelhouse, found Okafor asleep in his chair, and wrote the bearing in the log in your best hand. Then you drew the sign beside it, small and even, the way he'd taught you.
