Teal camper van on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A small illustrated camper van sits side on across the upper arm, with a roof rack and four windows outlined in black. The linework is fine and clean, with hatched shading along the lower body and a dark shadow beneath the wheels. Teal and white fills dominate the colour, set against pale skin and a teal sleeve.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody had driven the van since the summer my mother left, so when Aunt Grace asked for it to take the bridesmaids to the church, I spent an hour under the bonnet with a rag and a tin of oil. The paint was still teal and white under the dust, the roof rack still rattled on the corners, and the four little windows still had the lace curtains Grace had sewn in 1979. I told her it would get them there. I was not certain it would get them back.

On the day, the bride's shoes sat in the footwell and the cake was wedged on the back bench under a tea towel. Uncle Stanley, who had volunteered to hold the cake, sang Bridge Over Troubled Water with his eyes shut the whole way down the lane. We hit the ruts outside the church gate, the van lurched, the tea towel slid, and the bride laughed so hard she had to sit down on the verge in her dress until the bridesmaids fanned her with their order of service.

Afterwards, when the speeches were done and the trestle tables were being stacked, Grace pressed the keys into my palm without a word. The van had carried enough people's hopes for one lifetime, she said, and deserved a rest. I drove it once more round the field with the windows down and the rack empty, then parked it facing the hedge where the evening light would hit the teal panels last. I switched off the engine and listened to it tick as it cooled, the way old engines do, like something settling in for a long sleep.
