I've been sorting the old charts in the storeroom since you left. Under the stairs I found Father's school atlas, the one with the ring-bound maps, and in the back a page where he'd traced the Gulf coast in pencil and drawn a circle round the whole of Texas as though the state were a coin he meant to keep. The circle has a break in it on the western side, where he'd run out of paper or patience, and I have decided that is where the sea gets in.

Last night the fog lifted for an hour and I climbed to the gallery to look. You can see the mainland lights from there, a scatter of them like someone had dropped a spool of thread on the dark, and I thought how small the whole shape looks from up high, a brown outline holding everything we ever argued about. Father would have laughed. He always said maps were just promises people made about distance.

Come at Easter if the ferry's running. Bring the atlas back with you, and I'll show you where the break is. The lamp will be lit by then, I promise, or I'll have drowned trying. Your loving sister, Hettie.
