Tick Tock, the children sang at the gate, pointing with sticky fingers at the old tin face, Goes the clock, and the ponies, who had heard it every evening for forty years, stamped in time to the words. Old Sid still played the cornet for the walk-around. Mags still did the high wire without a net, because a net cost four pounds a week and we no longer had four pounds.

On the last night I climbed into the hut and wound the clock as far as the key would turn, though it had no business running. It ticked through the whole of the final act, about as long as a child can hold her breath, and then it stopped. I left the till open and the chalk board reading Tomorrow, rain or shine, and I went out to watch the lights go down one by one.
