Two cat heads with green and blue eyes on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two cartoon-style cat heads face in slightly different directions, one with green eyes and one with blue eyes. The outlines are thin, dark grey-black single lines, with light grey shading and only the eyes filled with colour. The subjects sit side by side on pale skin against a soft, blurred background.

They took up residence on the coal bunker behind the Co-op, and they did not so much as glance at the rats. Instead they sat facing a little apart, heads turned as if each was listening for the other to speak first. Every morning the baker's girl left them a saucer of milk, and every morning they drank it in turn, never at once, which Mrs Thwaite said was manners and Mr Hollis said was spite.
Then in October the fog came down thick off the moor, and the baker's girl went missing for an afternoon. Folk searched the becks and the allotments. It was the two cats who finally sat down in the middle of Market Street and would not move, the green eyes fixed on the cobbles, the blue eyes fixed on the same spot, until someone thought to look down the cellar grate. She had gone to fetch a cask of flour and fallen asleep on the sacks. Nobody said much, but the saucers were full the next morning, and from then on the two of them were never once seen facing the same way.
