The tattoo shows two cartoon cats standing upright and holding paws, with a small heart outline between them. The linework is dark grey-black with stippled dots for shading on the fur and bodies. Dear Len,

The tent came down for the last time on Sunday, and the wind took half the canvas across the common before the lads could catch it. Mr Pemberton has sold the lions to an outfit in Hull, which is a kindness, since nobody was paying to watch them yawn any more. What is left is us, the ponies, the two cats, and a ticket booth with CLOSED painted over in white gloss that keeps running in the rain.
Biscuit and Tallow still do the finale, though there is no finale to do. You remember how they used to stand up on their back legs at the end of the act and hold paws, bowing to nobody, while the drum rolled and the little brass heart Mr Pemberton bought in Margate swung from the ribbon between them. The heart's gone. Tallow chewed it off in March and swallowed it, and the vet in Ely said it would pass the usual way, which it did, to everyone's relief.
Last night I found them on the sawdust in the dark, still in their spangled collars, standing the way they always stood, paws knotted together. I said their names and they did not look round. Pemberton says the man from the rescue will take them Thursday, one cat each if they must, but I told him no. I have packed their blankets in the trunk with my good scissors and your old coat, and I have left the flap of the tent open so they can see the stars.
Come and fetch the trunk if you can. Bring a cart.
