Two halved avocados on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two halved avocados side by side, one showing its pit and the other a teardrop outline with a shaded pit. The linework is clean and dark, and the flesh of the left half is filled with stippled dot shading. The design is small and sits on a plain background of pale skin beside a lace fabric.

The avocados on the Thursday crate were all hard as church pews, and Maureen Pargeter had a rule about them: she would not sell a stone to a customer who would only throw it in the bin. She lifted each one, pressed the neck with her thumb the way her father had taught her on the Ridley Road stall, and set the bad ones aside for the chutney woman.

Tobias came in at ten past four, wearing his brother's coat, and asked whether she had any that would be ready by Sunday. He said it like a man asking after someone who had moved away without leaving a forwarding address. She found him two that gave a little under the thumb and wrapped them in last week's Gazette, the one with the crossword half done.
He came back the next Thursday with a paper bag. He had cut one open at his mother's kitchen table, he said, and the stone had come away whole, round and brown as a conker. He had been turning it in his palm ever since, unable to decide whether to plant it or bin it. Maureen tipped the bag onto the scales and turned the stones over with one finger.
"Pot on the south sill," she said. "Water it on Sundays. It takes longer than you'd like, but it doesn't mind waiting."
He laughed, the first time she had heard him do it, and said he would need a bigger pot. Behind him the net curtain at the back of the stall lifted and settled, and the two stones sat on the counter, one face up and one face down, like halves that had not yet agreed to meet.
