Two paw prints on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two solid black paw prints of similar size, placed one above and to the right of the other on the side of the ankle. The prints are simple filled silhouettes with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The image is black and white except for the red shoe, which draws the eye to the lower part of the frame.

Owen, the dog hasn't gone missing, not really, though I spent most of Tuesday believing she had. Mabel slipped out of the cab at the petrol hut while I was arguing with the pump, and by the time I came round the back there was only her track in the dust, two prints a stride apart, sharp as stamps all the way to the cattle grid. I followed them with a bottle of water and a hat that kept trying to leave me. You'll remember her from the trip down from Carlisle, curled in the footwell with her chin on my boot and never once complaining about the heat.

The tracks ran straight along the Sand Road for four miles, then turned left at a rusted sign with the lettering rubbed off, and stopped at a low white house with a blue gate. An old woman was sitting on the step with a biscuit tin on her knee. She didn't look surprised. She said the dog came up the road every evening at about six, had done for three summers, and was always fed before she was sent home. She'd given her a name, which she wouldn't tell me, and said I'd only be jealous.
I sat on the wall and waited for Mabel to come round the side of the house, which she did, tail going like a windscreen wiper, with a biscuit crumb on her nose. I could have hauled her back to the lorry there and then. Instead I put my boot down next to one of her prints in the dust, and it was the same size, and I laughed like an idiot. We've got a delivery in Eilat on Thursday. I'll bring her back to you in a fortnight, if she'll let me.
