Two sitting cats with a heart tail
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two cats are shown from behind, sitting side by side, with their tails curling together beneath them to form a small heart. The design is drawn in a single thin black outline with no shading or fill. It sits on pale skin against a plain background, centred in the frame.

Sorrow and Nan had come aboard the brig Verity in Bristol the week before she sailed for Valparaiso. They would not sit apart, not once in four years. Off Cape Finisterre, in a gale that laid the ship over until the lee rail went under, Sorrow went down the fore hatch after a rat that had no business being there. The ship lurched. The mate had the carpenter pry it open at dawn. They found the pair wedged in the bilge-room among the spare canvas, their tails knotted together so tightly that nobody could work out which tail belonged to which cat. Nobody tried very hard to part them after that. They came up into the light like two old men who had been drinking all night, and they have sat that way ever since, side by side, facing the stern.
'They never turn round to look at us,' Hob said, reaching for the bread. 'Not once. They're watching where we've been.'
