Watercolour cat on skin

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small curled cat with a closed-eye, sleeping expression is drawn in thin black linework. Loose blue, teal and pink watercolour washes spread around the outline, with a blue tail-like splash rising above the figure. The tattoo sits centrally on a plain patch of skin, with pink lace fabric at the left edge of the frame.

Nobody at the Tallow Creek fuel stop would admit to owning the cat, so by the time the dust had settled over the Saltpan Road it had become your problem. It lay curled in the spare-wheel well of the Land Rover with its tail tucked under its nose, a small grey knot that did not stir when you hit the first washboard ridge or when the radio gave up on the last station.

The sky turned at the fourth hour. A storm that had been sulking over the Hadrah escarpment all afternoon finally let go, and the rain came down in fat blue streaks that smeared the horizon pink where the sun was going. You pulled into a dry wash to wait it out. The cat woke then, stretched until its spine made a question mark, and hopped onto the bench seat as if it had paid for the ticket.

It sat in the windscreen light for a long while, watching the water run off the rocks in loose ribbons of colour, teal and rose, pooling in the hollows like someone had dropped a paint tin on the sand. When the rain eased, it stood, tail lifting high, and looked up the track towards Orrin's Well, the only roof for sixty miles, where a woman with burnt hands kept a bowl of milk by the door for strays.

You drove slowly after that, following the tail's blue flick through the puddles. At the well the woman was already waiting with the bowl. The cat didn't look back at you once. You stood in the doorway a moment longer than you needed to, then went out to the Land Rover, which smelled faintly of wet fur, and found the spare-wheel well empty and warm.
