XO lettering on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black tattoo reading XO, with the X and O drawn in simple, even linework on the side of a finger. The hand holds a white cigarette and has dark nail polish, and the blurred grey background keeps the focus on the tattoo. The image is warm-toned with a soft, slightly grainy finish.

Dear Marnie,

I have read your letter four times now, once for the news and three times for the bit about the seating plan, which you clearly wrote at two in the morning. Your Auntie Peg will not sit beside the Pritchards, and that is that. I have told Dad to fetch the cake knife down from the loft and keep his opinions to himself.
The dress sounds lovely. Do not let the woman at the shop talk you into the beaded bodice just because it cost more. You always wanted to look like yourself on the day, and you were never one for fuss. I am glad the florist finally rang back. Lilies are fine, as long as they are not the yellow ones, which make everybody sneeze.
Now, the thing I wanted to say, which I have been circling for a page. When you were nine and I took you to the seaside the week after your nan's funeral, you asked me why I wrote XO at the bottom of every card. I told you it was hugs and kisses. You said the hugs must be the X, because they looked like two arms crossed over each other. You were wrong and right at once, and I have been thinking about it since your letter came. Walk up the aisle with your hands free. Let the X be the arms and the O be whatever you find waiting on the other side of them.
Write back and tell me what Dad is wearing. I will hold my breath until it comes.
XO, Mum
