Mr Ferris kept the band on the same three foxtrots until the drummer threatened to walk, and I danced every one of them with my shoes pinching and my good stockings going at the heel.

Before the last waltz I bought a yellow rose from the bucket by the cloakroom, the one Dolly Harrow sells from her brother's allotment for threepence. The stems were wrapped in a strip of green crepe paper and the leaves had gone a sort of bottle-glass teal in the lamplight. I had only meant to keep it on the windowsill, but a sailor off the Lowestoft boat asked if he could walk me to the tram, and he held the rose the whole length of Marine Parade as if it might bolt.

At the tram stop he gave it back and said the petals were the colour of marmalade, which Mother would call common. I said it was nothing like marmalade, and then he laughed so hard he missed the tram. I still have the rose. It's pressed flat between the pages of the hymn book, and when I opened it this morning the gold had faded to the colour of weak tea, but the leaves are still green enough to tell you where he stood.
