Anchor, infinity sign and Hebrews 6:19 script
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the handwritten words Hebrews 6:19 across the top, with an anchor below. An infinity symbol is linked to the anchor's shaft, and a small outlined heart sits near the top of the shaft. The linework is clean and of even weight, set against pale skin on a close, straight-on crop.

Mind the step, and don't let the bride see you grinning like that, Tommy, it's bad luck before the vows. Now, where was I? Ah yes, the Saltings boat with the blue rope. Her name was Constance Ellery, and she had the sort of face that made the gulls go quiet.

Her husband Abel went out past the breakwater in a February gale to bring home the Marigold's crew, and the sea did what the sea does. For three days the village stood on the harbour wall and nobody spoke of hope, because hope was a thing you could drown in. Constance didn't wait on the wall. She went down to the chandler's, bought a length of old chain and a coil of tarred line, and sat in the back room tying knots until her fingers bled onto the rope.
The minister always said that hope is an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast. Constance didn't need him to explain it. She knew what an anchor did. It doesn't stop the storm. It holds you in place while the storm goes through, and it keeps you pointed at the thing you're tied to.
Abel came back on the fourth morning, grey and laughing, with the Marigold's men behind him in the boat. Constance had the knot ready, a loop of hemp with a small wooden heart whittled into the end, and she slipped it round his wrist without a word. Thirty-one years they had, and every one of them ran along that rope like a figure eight with no end to it. So raise your glasses to the happy pair, and let's hope their own rope holds.
