Dorothy Akers had been pressing foil transfers in the back room of a Bristol stationer's for thirty years, and she could tell a difficult order from the doorway. The Tuesday one came on pink card with a coffee ring across it: forty sheets, gold, "hot mess" in the top corner, two outlined rings to a sheet, and a heart with the word single written across it in a hand so cramped it looked cross.

Her apprentice, Kemi, wanted to query the spelling on the bride's sheet before it went through the press, but Dorothy said the client had asked for exactly that and it was not their job to be anyone's conscience. Kemi laughed, then stopped laughing, because the second ring had come off the plate a shade too thin. Dorothy stood over it for a long time with her reading glasses pushed up into her hair, then nodded and let the run go out.
Three weeks later a parcel came back, dented at one corner, with a note in biro: "Ran out of the heart on day two. Kept the rings. Tell the single one she was right." There was no signature, only a thumbprint of gold glitter on the back of the card.
Dorothy pinned the note above the press and did not reprint the heart. When Kemi asked why, Dorothy took down the last clean sheet from the rack, held it to the window, and showed her a ring that had worn to a pale outline, the way foil does. "Some things are only meant to last a fortnight," she said, and she left the sheet on the press where the light could reach it.
