Colour tattoo of Bart Simpson in a grey lace-edged heart with the words Eat my shorts, on the side of a hip.

Bart Simpson heart tattoo on hip

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon portrait of Bart Simpson sits inside a red heart with a grey scalloped border, with the words EAT MY SHORTS! in black lettering to the right. The linework is bold and dark with flat areas of yellow, orange, blue and red, in a classic cartoon-style approach. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against bare skin, with the body curving across the lower right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Gwen Tullett had painted shop signs in Hull for thirty-one years, and she had never once been asked to paint a cartoon boy. The request came on a Tuesday from a bloke called Lenny Ashdown, who ran the chip van outside the bus depot and wanted his new hatch decorated before the council inspector came round on Friday.

"Something cheeky," he said, sliding a folded napkin across the counter. The sketch was a yellow-faced lad with spiky hair, scowling out of a heart. Gwen studied it for a long time over her reading glasses. "I'm not putting that on your hatch, Lenny. The council would have me up in front of a tribunal."

She painted it anyway, in the back room under the strip light, with a sable brush no wider than a matchstick. Red for the heart, grey for the scalloped frame, and the yellow she mixed herself because no tin ever matched. By Thursday the lettering was done, black and bold, and Lenny stood on the pavement with his arms folded, reading the words aloud twice before laughing until he had to sit on a crate.

On Friday the inspector arrived, read the hatch slowly, and asked Gwen whether she had any others like it. She did not. She had a jam jar of old brushes, a cold cup of tea, and a small, unexpected pleasure: somebody had finally asked her for something she would have been too proud to paint for herself.
