Cartoon caricature with quote on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a cartoon caricature of a man with a large dark afro, round glasses and a moustache, wearing a red and white bobble hat and a red and white striped top with a collar. Bold black outlines and flat areas of red, brown, white and grey give it a cartoon finish, and the speech text Hello and Is it me you're looking for is set in black lettering around the figure. It sits on the lower leg against a plain skin background.

At the Ashcombe Grammar reunion the buffet was picked clean by half eight, and Gordon Fitch had already walked the length of the function room twice in his red and white striped jumper, holding a plastic cup of warm prosecco like a torch. He was looking for Maureen Duddy, who had sat behind him in Geography for five years and once let him copy the entire coursework on the Severn Bore.

He tried the photo booth, the raffle table and the bar, where a man in a fleece was explaining cryptocurrency to nobody. Each time he leaned in, squinted through the round frames of his glasses and said to the nearest stranger, 'Hello, is it me you're looking for?', a line he had rehearsed in the car park. Nobody laughed except a woman in a sequinned jacket, who said, 'Gordon, that is the worst thing anyone has ever said to me.' Then she pointed towards the fire exit.
Maureen was out there under the green sign, shoes in one hand, an unlit vape in the other. She told him she had only let him copy the erosion section because she had got the figures wrong on purpose, so he would fail with someone else's mistakes and not his own. Thirty years of thinking about it, and she had been waiting by the bins for him to ask.
He sat on the step beside her. The bobble on his hat had gone flat in the car. 'Right,' he said. 'Tell me the real figures, then.' They were still talking when the caretaker switched off the hall lights, and neither of them went back inside to look for anyone else.
