Betty Boop as a nurse on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style figure of Betty Boop in a grey nurse's dress, white cap with a red cross, stockings and heeled shoes, standing with one hand on her hip. Bold black outlines and smooth colour shading define the character, with black hair, pink cheeks and red accents. The design fills the length of the forearm against a pale, softly lit background.

The river was up again by Tuesday, brown and quick under Hartley Lock, and the barge Mabel Rose had been tied on the wrong side of the bridge since dawn. You are the only nurse for six miles of towpath, which means you are also the one who climbs aboard with the carbolic tin under one arm and your cap pinned at the regulation angle, because Sister Agnes swears a cap set straight is half the cure.

The bargee's boy has a split shin from a winch cable and a face like a wet cat. He tells you the girl on the poster above the stove has your exact nose, and you tell him poster girls never have to hold a lamp steady while a stitch goes in. He laughs, then goes quiet when you thread the needle. You hum a dance tune under your breath so he has something to watch besides your hands, and by the third stitch he is calling you Nurse Betty, which you decide to allow.
Mr Dunmore, the skipper, wants to take the barge through the sluice before dark. You tell him the boy stays put until morning, and when he starts to argue you simply stand in the cabin doorway with your hand on your hip and wait. He has known you since you were a girl pulling reeds off the weir, and he knows that stance. He mutters something about women and tides and goes up on deck to tie off the lines again.
Later, with the boy asleep and the stove ticking, you step out onto the gunwale. The water has climbed the bank to the height of the hedges, and across the flats the lock-keeper's cottage lights come on one by one, a neat row of white cap badges glowing in the dusk.
