Calvin and Hobbes crossing a log

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon characters Calvin and Hobbes. Hobbes, the striped tiger, leaps with arms raised above a log, while a small blond boy in a red and black striped shirt runs along the log beneath him. A stream with rocks, grass and a small shrub sits below, drawn with bold outlines and soft colour shading.

The lift at Kestrel House had been broken since March, so every trip down to the bins became a dare. Tomasz counted the landings out loud while I carried the bags, and by the sixth floor he was always making up rules. Only kids who lived above the twelfth were allowed to call the stairwell the river, and only if they could say it without laughing.

Behind the flats ran a culvert the council had never bothered to fence, a thin brown stream crossed by a fallen ash log. Nobody crossed it except Tomasz, who did it on one foot. Last summer I watched him halfway over, arms flung wide, and thought of Grandad's old stuffed tiger, the one he'd won at a fairground in Blackpool and carried everywhere until its stripes wore grey. Sergeant, he called it. "Sergeant says you're holding your breath," I shouted. Tomasz grinned and said Sergeant wasn't real, which was why he was allowed to jump.

Grandad stopped going out after the winter. The tiger went on the windowsill, facing the car park, and I took to telling them both about the stream: how Tomasz fell in twice, how the water was colder than it looked. In October the council came with a chainsaw, and by teatime the log was gone, leaving a pale stump and a dent in the bank.

On the last day of the month I went down alone with the bags. I stood at the stump for a long time, then stepped onto the bank where the log had been and jumped, arms wide, landing in the mud with both boots. When I looked up, Grandad's window was lit, and I held Sergeant up for him to see.
