Cartoon boy and tiger tattoo
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a cartoon boy with spiky hair and a striped tiger standing side by side, the boy leaning against the tiger. The design uses clean, even black outlines with no shading and sits on a plain background of skin. Only black ink is visible, and the composition is centred and tightly framed.

The 16:42 to Leeds was late, as it always was, and a woman in a yellow mac had been pacing the length of the bench for twenty minutes, reading the departures board as if it might change its mind. "She's going to miss the whole rest of her life," he said, in the voice I did for him, which was deeper than mine and smelled faintly of bus seats.
When the train finally came in, the woman stopped pacing, put her hand on the door, then turned round and asked me whether this was the right platform. I said yes. She said thank you and got on, and I realised she had only wanted someone to say something back.
I sat with Brigadier until the lights on the board went out. I did not tell him he had been right about her. He knew anyway. He always knew, which is why I never let him see me cry.
