Cartoon cat bow with polka dots on an arm

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A large bow made of two polka dot loops, one red and one turquoise, with a cartoon cat face and a small red bow at its centre. The bold black outlines and smooth colour fills with soft grey shading give a traditional, flash-style look. The design is centred on the image against plain, lightly freckled skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat had been sitting on the register for three days, and Nell had stopped pretending it was there by accident. Snow had closed the pass above Hollin Gate on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the Crown and Lantern was full of stranded travellers, a cheese salesman, two monks from somewhere south of Carlisle, and a boy who kept asking when the coaches would dig out. Nell's job was the bar. The cat's job, as far as she could tell, was to sit on the ledger and stare at the door.

It was a ceramic thing, grey-faced and round-eared, with a red bow tied at its crown. Her grandmother had called it Kitty Bow and refused to say where it came from. Every morning it had been moved a little closer to the cellar stairs. Nell blamed the monks. The monks blamed the draught.

On the Friday the power failed and the lamps went low. Nell took a torch down the cellar steps and found the cheese salesman sitting on a barrel, quietly eating walnuts from a paper bag. He had been sent for the good cider and had found instead a crate of letters addressed to the inn in her grandmother's hand, none of them posted, all dated the winter the pass first closed. Each one said the same thing: keep a bed warm, someone will come down.

She carried the letters up two at a time. When she reached the bar, the cat had left the ledger and was sitting on the window sill, bow turned toward the road, where a single pair of lamps was crawling up through the white.
