Pemberly was a creature of the tidepools, shaped like a pear that had lost an argument, and he had one great ambition: to taste the chocolate milk the keeper's wife kept cold in a wooden crate on the rocks. Every evening she wedged a bottle in the seaweed for the fishermen's boys, and every evening Pemberly stretched up his neck, lashes fluttering, only to find it empty, because the gulls had got there first. Gulls, he said, were a plague sent to test a fellow's patience.

So one night in the fog he hauled himself up the lighthouse steps, one slow slap at a time, and reached the lamp room just as the great light swung round. The blue wash of the beam poured over him, and the keeper's wife, who had come up with a lantern, found him blinking at the lens. He pointed at the bottle in her apron pocket with a small flower-shaped hand and said, very clearly, "I like chocolate milk."

She laughed until she had to sit down on the stairs, then handed him the bottle, and he drank the lot standing there. The gulls still circle the rocks, but not one of them has got a sip off him since. Mind the top step on your way out. It's slippy with cream.
