Cartoon star on the inner wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small cartoon star with a thick black outline, orange-yellow shading and two black oval eyes sits on the inner wrist. The linework is bold and clean, with soft shading across the star's body. The star is centred on a close crop of pale skin, with a grey fabric edge and a cream fabric visible at the sides.

Nobody warns you that a lighthouse collects things. By my third winter on Gullhaven Point I had a drawer of sea glass, two cracked brass buttons and the name board off a drowned dinghy. The star arrived in October, stuck to the inside of the lantern glass, orange as a marmalade tin, with two black eyes that followed me round the gallery like a nosy aunt.

I scraped it off on the Tuesday with a razor blade and a bad temper. On the Wednesday it was back, a little to the left, looking pleased with itself. Mrs Penhallow from the village said it was the Harbour Board's doing. The Harbour Board said it was a gull with ideas. I only knew that when I climbed up at dusk to trim the wick, the star winked at me, and the beam swept out across the bay and every boat that saw it turned for home.
So I stopped scraping. I stopped complaining too, which Mrs Penhallow said was the first sensible thing I'd done since I came out here. I started saying good evening to it while I lit the lamp, and it blinked back, slow and deliberate, like a man tipping his hat.
In February a fishing smack lost its bearings in a sea fret, its engine coughing like an old dog. I stood at the rail with the foghorn going and saw a small orange light hanging in the murk, blinking, then blinking again, as if to say this way, you daft thing. The smack came in past the rocks with a metre to spare. The skipper rang the station the next morning to ask who'd been up there keeping watch. I told him the truth. I said his name was Gerald and he was getting a biscuit tin for his birthday.
