Charmander and Squirtle side by side
Other · Colour · Photo
Two cartoon Pokémon tattoos sit side by side on a limb: Charmander in orange with a flame-tipped tail on the left, and Squirtle in blue with a brown-shelled body on the right. Both have thick black outlines, simple cel-style shading and large expressive eyes. The orange and blue fills are set against the skin, and the two figures are framed as near mirror images of each other.

Past the last cottage at Hollin Edge, where the lane gives up and becomes bracken, there was a pond that never froze. Two creatures lived at its shallow end. One was a lizard the colour of a dropped ember, with a tail that burned at its tip like a candle nobody had snuffed. The other was a turtle, blue as a January sky, who carried a brown shell on its back like a roof it had not asked for.

The village children said the lizard was the bold one and the turtle the sensible one, and that was true as far as children go. The lizard ran at brambles. The turtle waited for them to move. In the autumn the rains came early and the lane flooded to the stiles, and the baker's boy went missing on the far side of the wood with a basket of loaves still on his arm.
The lizard went in first, its tail flaring so the trees showed up orange on every side. The turtle followed, slow and steady, pushing through the water with its head held high. They found the boy under an oak with his ankle wrapped in his own apron, and they walked him home between them, one lighting the path and one keeping the pace.
When the baker asked what he owed them, the turtle said nothing and the lizard said bread. Every morning after that, two loaves sat on the pond's edge, one crusty, one soft, and nobody in Hollin Edge ever saw who took them.
