Dolores from flat 1407 said it had been there since Tuesday. Mr Pell said it had been there since the building went up, and that he had the paperwork to prove it, though he never showed anyone the paperwork.

I took it in for a week while I put up notices. It sat on my windowsill above the car park and watched the buses with its teal eyes, and when I came home from the late shift it was always somewhere new: once on the kettle, once folded into the washing basket like a parcel. It did not eat or purr. It only grinned, and the grin was the sort that makes you check your pockets for things you have not lost yet.

On the Sunday a woman came up the stairs, out of breath, carrying a lead with no collar on it. Everyone up here is a little mad, it added, underlined twice.
