Crescent moon with La Luna on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline crescent moon with a stylised face in profile sits on the inner wrist, with the words LA LUNA in capital letters below and the number 23 above. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the lettering uses a plain sans serif. The tattoo is shown up close and centred on the wrist against pale skin, with a dark object at the lower edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon came down to the pit village of Halsey Row every night in the winter of the long strike, and it was the only thing in the valley that did not owe the company money. Old Maud Greaves said so to anyone who would stand still long enough to hear it, and most of the children believed her, because she had buried two husbands and never once lied about the weather.

The moon had a face like a man who had not slept, and it hung low over the slag heaps where nothing grew. On the night the lamp oil ran out, Maud's grandson Tom climbed the tip with a tin of candle ends and a question he was too proud to ask aloud. He asked it of the moon instead. Why does nobody look up anymore, he said, when the water is cut off and the bread is grey? The moon, which is patient, said nothing, and so Tom sat on the cold shale and counted the nights since his father went down the shaft and did not come up. He got as far as twenty-three before the cold made him stop.

In the morning the pit men came up the lane carrying their dinner tins, and Tom's mother had drawn a crescent on the back of an old rent book and was holding it up to the window. It had a face in profile, with a nose like a blade and a mouth that was almost smiling. Under it she had printed the words in plain capitals: LA LUNA. Nobody in Halsey Row knew why she used the Spanish, and nobody asked. They only saw that she had put the moon back on the wall of the world where they could find it again.
