Dessert tattoos across eight fingers
Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two photographs show eight small tattoos of sweet treats, one on each finger of both hands, arranged in a row. The top row shows a lollipop, a pink-frosted cupcake, a glazed cinnamon roll and an ice cream cone, and the bottom row shows a pink-iced donut, a blue-tinted waffle, a sundae with a cherry and a layered cake slice. Each motif has dark outlines with soft colour shading in pinks, blues, browns and yellows.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sugar on your sleeves, because I am about to tell you how Dolly Mercer's sweet trolley came to be stolen off Platform Four by eight sugar-mad urchins. Nobody believes it, so you'll have to take my word, and my word's better than most timetables.

Dolly ran the buffet at Harrowgate Junction for thirty-one years, and every morning she wheeled out her trolley before the first milk train. Lollipops with their striped swirls, a cupcake piped pink as a choirboy's cheek, cinnamon rolls sweating glaze, an ice cream cone that never melted in her hands, a donut hung with sprinkles like confetti, waffles the blue of the sea off Scarborough, a sundae with a cherry perched on top like a lookout, and a slice of layered cake she swore was the finest thing in the North Riding. Eight treats, one for every finger she used to count change.
One wet March the trolley vanished. Eight scrap-yard urchins had a plan, and by the time the 7.40 pulled out the trolley was gone and so were the sweets, lined up along the rail like tiny passengers waiting for a train that never came. Dolly stood on the platform in her apron and laughed until she had to sit down on her own suitcase.
Here's the turn, mind. Those urchins crept back at dusk with the trolley, shamefaced, and left one crumb of each treat on her counter in a neat row. She never reported them. She sold the crumbs as lucky charms at a penny apiece, and the buffet's never been short of a customer since.
