Fine line rose and knife on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black linework tattoo shows a rose bloom in profile with a thin stem that crosses a diagonal knife with a visible handle and blade. The lines are thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits centrally on the ankle. The skin is dark brown with a rolled denim cuff at the top of the frame and a textured white wall behind.

Rain had been coming off the Thursday awnings since seven, and Nell Okafor had given up trying to keep the buckets dry. The roses were Dutch and tight in their paper, four for a pound to anyone willing to stand still in the drip. Her father's knife lay on the crate beside the scales, its handle wrapped in black tape gone soft from years of wet hands, and she kept reaching for it without thinking, the way you reach for a banister on stairs.

Mr Abbott from the cheese stall ducked under her edge with his umbrella held sideways against the wind. He asked why she bothered cutting the stems at all when the customers only wanted the heads. Nell turned a bloom in her fingers and said that a stem cut straight across sealed itself on the water, but one cut on the slant could still drink, and a rose that drank would last until Sunday. He laughed and said that was the trouble with everything: you had to take a little off before anything would keep.
By four the cloud had thinned to a grey ribbon over the church spire, and only three roses were left. A woman in a yellow mac asked for the last one for her sister's window box, and Nell trimmed it on the slant in one clean pass, the blade sliding past the thorns. She wrapped it in brown paper and handed it over with the change. Then she wiped the knife on her apron, laid it on the dry crate, and watched the light come out sideways across the wet cobbles, catching every puddle like a dropped coin.
