Galaxy triangle on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A downward-pointing triangle with a bold black outline sits on the forearm, crossed by a horizontal black line near its middle. The inside of the triangle is filled with a soft, blended galaxy: purple and pink clouds above, shading into rainbow hues below. The black linework is crisp and solid, and the colour is smooth against the pale skin on a dark background.

The rain had been falling on Saltergate market since the morning the bells cracked, and the stallholders had stopped complaining about it. Mother Ilse kept a cart of glass jars at the end of the row, and in each jar she kept a piece of weather. Nobody believed her until the day a boy came with a copper coin and asked for something dark enough to hold the stars.

She gave him a jar of night she had caught over the tanneries in February. He tipped it toward the lamp and saw a sky of plum and rose, with clouds like smoke in milk, and under them a seam of colour that ran from green to gold to the red of a fox's coat. He asked what it cost. She said he would have to bring back what he had been carrying in his other pocket, the one he thought nobody saw.
He did not understand, and he went home with the jar wrapped in his scarf. That night the rain came sideways through the window. In the morning the jar was empty and the boy's pocket was full of a small, heavy thing he had never owned: a promise he had made to his brother and broken.
He walked back through the market with the jar. Ilse was sweeping water off her step with a broom made of heather. He set the jar down, and she looked at the line of sky inside it, the bright band that cut across the dark like a level on a builder's plank. "That is the horizon," she said. "Everything above it is what you want. Everything below it is what you owe." She took the jar and tipped it into the gutter, and the rain carried the colours away.
