Black and red outlined heart tattoo on a forearm, with a black heartbeat trace and the script words Until I see you again.

Heartbeat heart with script quote on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black outlined heart on pale skin holds a black heartbeat trace on the left and the script words Until I see you again on the right. Red ink fills a curved band along the upper edge and the lower tip, contrasting with the black linework. The photograph is taken straight on and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, you lot, and mind the rope, for the big wheel's just stopped and Old Ferris won't refund a ticket for it. Right, you want the story of the heart-tester? Everyone asks. Forty summers back this fair pitched on the marsh outside Wisbech, and by the candy stall stood a brass machine with a leather grip and a needle that climbed. Squeeze it hard and a bell rang, and the painted sign swore the needle showed your heart.

Nell Harkness worked that grip the year the fair came through. She wore a length of red ribbon knotted round her wrist, and every night she tied the loose end to the carousel rail so the painted horses would not drift off into the dark. Her brother Tom ran the dodgems and could never sit still for a minute. Each evening, when the lights came on, he crossed the grass to stand by her machine, and each evening he said the same thing before he went back to his cars: "Until I see you again, Nell."

One October the fair packed up early, and Tom did not come back across the grass. Nell kept squeezing that brass grip for strangers. The needle climbed for a farmer, a lad with a bad hand, an old woman who wanted to know if she had any beat left in her. Nell always said the machine never lied, which was the trouble of it, because it could only tell you how fast you were going, never where you were headed.

The next spring the fair came back to the marsh. Nell found the carousel rail still hung with a faded red ribbon, tied in Tom's clumsy double knot. She left it there, and the horses went round and round, keeping to their circle.
