Hello Kitty in Sailor Moon costume

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A bold tattoo shows a cat character with a white face, yellow nose and black outlined features, wearing Sailor Moon's blonde odango buns, heart tiara, blue sailor collar and large red bow. The thick black outlines and flat, solid fills in yellow, red, blue and white give it a classic cartoon look. The design sits centrally in the frame against a blurred background with a faint tattoo visible at the left edge.

Pell had been asked to mind the bakery's tea urn, the sea-fog cake and the cat, in that order, and by half past seven she had managed only the first. The cat had found the costume in the lost property box at the pier theatre: yellow buns, a silver heart for a tiara, a sailor collar that smelled of mothballs and a red bow the size of a dinner plate. It wore all of it with the calm of someone who knew it was the best-dressed thing on the seafront.

"Put her down, Pell," said Mr Doyle from the doorway, holding a tray of scones like a shield. "She's not going to the regatta like that." The cat sat on the counter, blinked its two black dot eyes and licked a yellow paw. Outside, the bell on the lifeboat house began to ring for rehearsal, and the whole front street seemed to lean towards the window to look.

Pell had a plan, and the plan was ridiculous. She lifted the cat, tucked a bun behind the urn's spout and walked out onto the pier with the cat under one arm and the scones under the other. Heads turned. A small boy began to clap. By the time they reached the rail the whole crowd was humming the theme from the pier band's old cassette, and the cat, bow trembling with dignity, raised one paw as if it had been expecting them all along.

Two weeks later the regatta committee gave the cat a rosette. Nobody ever found out where the tiara went, and the cat, when asked, looked only mildly smug.
